OPN-2003 Quick Start
If you are having trouble getting the OPN-2003 to connect to the Mac Companion Application, try printing the PDF that was included with the installer, and scanning the +-USB1-+ barcode on the page. Your OPN-2003 will sound a tone, then after a few seconds it will connect.
PC
- 1) Download the "OPN-2001 PC Companion Application" under software downloads and the "All In One Installer Package" under driver downloads.
- 2) Double click on the driver installer and follow the instructions.
- 3) Unzip the OPN2001 application file, and copy both items to a convenient location to launch the application from (no installation is required).
- 4) Double click on OPN2001.exe to launch the application.
- 5) Scan barcodes, the connect the OPN2003 to the computer, and click "Get Barcodes"
- 6) Optionally contact Technical support for help with settings.
Mac
In order to set up the OPN-2003 on the Mac, we will need to install the Mac Companion Application and configure the OPN-2003 to connect to the Mac.
- 1.) To install the Mac Companion Application, download the "OPN-2003 MAC Companion Application" under software downloads near the bottom of this page. Open the resulting folder, and run the installer "Opticon OPN Demo Application.pkg." Follow the prompts until the installation is complete.
- 2.) Print the PDF document in the same folder titled "Instructions.pdf." This document contains configuration barcodes for the OPN-2003. These barcodes are used to change the behavior of the OPN-2003 when it connects to a computer. Scan the +-USB1-+ driver to set the OPN-2003 up to connect to the Mac Companion Application.
- 3.) Plug the OPN-2003 into the Mac. At this point the OPN-2003 should be recognized as a network interface.
- 4.) Start up the OPN-2003 Mac Companion Application using the Finder. It will automatically detect the OPN-2003. The connection can be confirmed by the green "Connected" text in the top right corner of the application.
The OPN-2003 and the Mac are now connected and working together.

Usage
Loading Firmware
While there are multiple components to the firmware on an OPN-2003 (Bootloader, OS and Application) the instructions to load them individually or all together are the same. You simply choose the appropriate file(s) during the right part in the process. All files available from Opticon are found in the Downloads section of this page. In addition to the individual files there are also combination files which are all three components bundled together into a single file for easy installation. It is recommended to use these combination files. As the Bootloader and OS files will always be the same you simply choose the combination file for the application you wish to load.
- Bootloader files are provided by Opticon and always follow the naming convention beginning with RAFV (e.g. RAFV0306.hex).
- OS files are provided by Opticon and always follow a naming convention beginning with RBFV (e.g. RBFV0217.hex).
- Application files are provided by Opticon but could also be provided by a reseller, distributor or developed on ones own by using the freely downloadable SDK (See the downloads section). If provided by Opticon the application files will almost always follow a naming convention beginning with RFF (e.g. RFF35106).
- Download necessary files.
- Firmware: This would be either the Bootloader, OS, Application or combination file from the Downloads section.
- Appload: This is the loader program for the PC that installs the firmware file onto the unit. See the download section.
- USB Drivers: These drivers are necessary so that Windows will provide a COM port that Appload needs to communicate with the device. Both 32 bit and 64 bit versions are found in the downloads section.

- Install Appload
- Unzip the file Appload EAGV0142.zip by right-clicking and selecting 'Extract All'
- double-click the resulting file 'Appload Setup.exe' which will start the install wizard. You may need to select 'next' a few times and are allowed to choose the install folder and whether Appload places an icon on your desktop. You may simply choose the defaults for all options. Appload will launch at the end of the install process.
- Connect the OPN-2003 to your PC
- Install the firmware
- Launch Appload (if it is not already running).
- select 'Settings' > 'Port' > choose the port that says 'Opticon USB Code Reader(1D)'
- select 'Settings' > 'IrDA Adapter/Cradle type' > 'Not installed'
- select 'File' > 'Download' > browse to the firmware file downloaded in step 1 and select it.
- When complete the OPN-2003 will emit a series of beeps and reboot. When the LED is steady RED (indicating charging) or GREEN (indicating fully charged) the process is complete and you may disconnect your OPN-2003 from the PC. instruction manuals for the various applications are available for download in the Downloads section.

FAQ
Can the OPN-2003 be used in USB Keyboard mode as well as CSP2 mode?
Yes, with the latest version of the OS and Application the OPN-2003 now supports USB-HID mode. While in this mode you don't need to use the PC Companion Application to retrieve barcode scans. Simply plug the device in, open up Notepad or other software capable of receiving keyboard input, and press the small key on the OPN-2003 and it will transmit stored barcodes. You can also scan barcodes in real time while plugged in.
