About

The all new OPN6000, Opticon’s latest companion scanner. The OPN6000 is a very compact battery powered data collector with a built-in Opticon 2D barcode scanner. Due to its compact size and its Bluetooth 5.4 (BLE) and USB capabilities, the OPN6000 is the ideal companion scanner for mobile devices like the iPhone/iPad and Android phones and tablets. Configure and collect barcode data on Mobile devices using the OptiConnect-app or use its batch functionality to configure and retrieve data by using USB on PC’s and laptops. It is so small that it easily fits into your pocket. Due to its extremely low power usage the battery life is unprecedented and its wired and wireless charging support makes it easy to recharge.

The key features of the OPN6000 are the following:

Firmware Loading

There are multiple components to the firmware on an OPN6000 (Bootloader, OS and Application), however the instructions to load them individually or all together are the same. In most cases, all you'll need to do is load the OS, and the proper Application file for your needs.

Follow the directions below to load firmware on to the OPN6000.

Preparation

  1. Download the, USB Drivers, Firmware File, and Appload which is available in the Software Downloads.
  2. Extract the OPN6000 Firmware, the Appload.zip file, and the USB Drivers Installer.zip file. The OPN6000 Firmware file should be extracted into a convenient folder.
  3. Install USB Drivers by double-clicking the 'USB Drivers Installer.exe'. When installing there will be 4 option, you only need the second box 'OPN/OPR/MDI/OPI/OPH/M5/M6 Drivers' checked.
  4. Install Appload by double-clicking the 'Appload Setup.exe' file, which will start the install wizard. The defaults are fine in most cases, so keep clicking 'Next' until you are finished. Appload will launch at the end of the install process.
  5. Connect the OPN6000 to your PC

Install the Firmware

  1. Launch Appload if it is not already running.
  2. We first need to choose the correct COM port. From the main Appload window, select 'Settings' > 'Port', then choose the port that says 'Opticon USB Code Reader'.
  3. Now we can start installing the firmware file. In Appload please choose 'File', then 'Download', then navigate to and select the firmware file. You should see a progress indicator and the words 'Initializing IRdA' if this is working.
  4. When complete the OPN6000 will emit a series of beeps and reboot. When the LED is steady RED (indicating charging) or GREEN (indicating fully charged) the process is complete and you may disconnect your OPN6000 from the PC.
  5. Your scanner is now ready for use. The User Manual in the Documents section goes over the various modes and how to best utilize them.

Scanner Modes

Bluetooth HID

This mode will make your scanner behave like a physical Bluetooth keyboard. You can connect the scanner directly to a Bluetooth device (tablet, smartphone, PC) and scan your barcodes directly on the connected device as if hand typed.

Scan the configuration code linked here to enable Bluetooth HID mode.

OPN2001 Simulation

The OPN2001 Simulation is a batch mode that uses the Companion Application to download the barcodes into a text or csv file. Our Companion Application OPN200x is available for free in the Downloads section below. You may also need to scan this barcode sheet to put the OPN6000 into the OPN2001 simulation mode.

Mass Storage Device Mode (MSD Mode)

This mode makes the OPN-6000 act like a flash disk and stores the batched bar code into a file by scanning the configuration code barcode sheet. When the OPN-6000 is connected to a USB cable and plugged into a computer, then a window will pop up asking if you want to browse the files stored. Any bar codes stored will show up in the SCANNED.TXT file.

Once that's finished, scanning bar codes is as simple as pressing a button. When you want to download your bar code scans, plug the OPN-6000 into a computer, and copy the text file out of the flash drive. For more configuration options, see the User Manual Storage Application. In particular, the very last page has barcodes that can be scanned to configure the layout of the text file.

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) / OptiConnect

OptiConnect (available on Android, iPhone, MacOS and Windows) provides a user-friendly interface to connect, configure, manage and update your device wirelessly. Your scanned barcode data is transmitted real-time or upon connection, after which it can be managed, validated and exported as desired. An API and Android Intents allows easy integration with other apps.

Data Collector mode (OseComm)

This mode allows for automatic downloading of your barcode data (as a file) upon connecting your device to a PC by USB using the OseComm32 application or SDK.

USB cabled scanner

It is also possible to use the OPN-6000 as a wired cabled scanner, both USB-HID and USB-VCP are supported. Similar to any other cabled USB scanner. USB-VCP can also be used to load new scanner firmware to the scanner using Appload.
