OPN2003

To get set up with your OPN2003 follow the steps below.

If you are having trouble getting the OPN-2003 to connect to the Mac Companion Application, try printing the PDF that was included with the installer, and scanning the +-USB1-+ barcode on the page. Your OPN-2003 will sound a tone, then after a few seconds it will connect.

PC

  • 1) Download the "OPN-2001 PC Companion Application" under software downloads and the "All In One Installer Package" under driver downloads.
  • 2) Double click on the driver installer and follow the instructions.
  • 3) Unzip the OPN2001 application file, and copy both items to a convenient location to launch the application from (no installation is required).
  • 4) Double click on OPN2001.exe to launch the application.
  • 5) Scan barcodes, the connect the OPN2003 to the computer, and click "Get Barcodes"
  • 6) Optionally contact Technical support for help with settings.

Mac

In order to set up the OPN-2003 on the Mac, we will need to install the Mac Companion Application and configure the OPN-2003 to connect to the Mac.

  • 1.) To install the Mac Companion Application, download the "OPN-2003 MAC Companion Application" under software downloads near the bottom of this page. Open the resulting folder, and run the installer "Opticon OPN Demo Application.pkg." Follow the prompts until the installation is complete.
  • 2.) Print the PDF document in the same folder titled "Instructions.pdf." This document contains configuration barcodes for the OPN-2003. These barcodes are used to change the behavior of the OPN-2003 when it connects to a computer. Scan the +-USB1-+ driver to set the OPN-2003 up to connect to the Mac Companion Application.
  • 3.) Plug the OPN-2003 into the Mac. At this point the OPN-2003 should be recognized as a network interface.
  • 4.) Start up the OPN-2003 Mac Companion Application using the Finder. It will automatically detect the OPN-2003. The connection can be confirmed by the green "Connected" text in the top right corner of the application.

The OPN-2003 and the Mac are now connected and working together.

Software

Software Description Download
Appload Appload is Opticon's multi-purpose utility for installing firmware onto devices such as the OPN2003. Currently Windows only. Download
Firmware: Bootloader This is the lowest level of firmware. Download
Firmware: OS One of two pieces of firmware required for the proper functioning of the OPN2003. Appload (see above) is required for loading the OS onto the OPN2003. Download
Firmware: Storage Demo This standard demo application provides batch storage of scanned barcodes. As this demo does not enable Bluetooth pairing or data transmission, all data must be transferred to a host (typically a Windows PC) via USB. Appload (see above) is required for loading this application onto the OPN2003. Download
Firmware: OPN2001 Simulation Application This OPN2003 application enables the OPN2003 to behave as an OPN2001 with regard to user behavior and PC interaction. Windows and Mac software specifically written for the OPN2001 is required to transfer or receive data from an OPN2003 running this application. Appload (see above) is required for loading this application onto the OPN2003. Download
Firmware: Combination - Batch Demo This single file is the Bootloader, OS and Standard Batch Demo packaged into a single file for easy upgrading Download
Firmware: Combination - OPN2001 Simulation Demo This single file is the Bootloader, OS and Standard OPN2001 Emulator Application packaged into a single file for easy upgrading Download
OPN-2001 PC Companion Application While this software was originally intended for use only with our OPN-2001 product, the OPN-2002 and OPN-2003 both are capable of running an OPN-2001 emulator program directly on their hardware that allows them to behave exactly as an OPN-2001. In such circumstances this PC application is required to get your data from the OPN. Download
OPN-2003 Macintosh Companion Application Similar to the PC companion application this version is for the Macintosh OS X platform. Note that due to a known issue this version only supports automatic polling mode (automatically downloading and deleting your data from the OPN as soon as it is plugged in to the Mac). Download
SDK: C-Library Kit The OPN2003 SDK is called the C-Library Kit. Embedded applications are written in C and are compiled with the WinARM GCC compiler. The compiler, source files, API information, libraries, sample code, and examples are provided in the download. Note that the software created with this SDK runs locally on the OPN-2003 directly. And PC side software is beyond the scope of this SDK and strictly speaking is not necessary. Download
OPN-2001 SDK If you are using your OPN-2003 with the OPN-2001 simulation/emulation software than you will need a PC application to communicate with the OPN-2003. This SDK is for use in developing PC side application that can communicate with the OPN-2001 emulation software the correct way. This SDK is not for use to develop application that run directly on the OPN-2003. See the C Library Kit above for that kind of development. Download

Drivers

Platform Description Download
All In One Installer Package USB-to-serial drivers installer package for both 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows XP (32 bit only), Vista, and 7. This package contains two drivers. The first driver is for the OPN-200x as well as many of Opticon's other products. The second driver is for Opticon's cradles and a few other products. You can choose any of the drivers to install on the first screen of the installer program. Download
Macintosh User Mode Driver This driver is not required for Macintosh end users. This driver file is intended for system developers to include in their application package. See the SDK linked above for documentation and usage instructions. Download

Usage

Loading Firmware

While there are multiple components to the firmware on an OPN-2003 (Bootloader, OS and Application) the instructions to load them individually or all together are the same. You simply choose the appropriate file(s) during the right part in the process. All files available from Opticon are found in the Downloads section of this page. In addition to the individual files there are also combination files which are all three components bundled together into a single file for easy installation. It is recommended to use these combination files. As the Bootloader and OS files will always be the same you simply choose the combination file for the application you wish to load.

  • Bootloader files are provided by Opticon and always follow the naming convention beginning with RAFV (e.g. RAFV0306.hex).
  • OS files are provided by Opticon and always follow a naming convention beginning with RBFV (e.g. RBFV0217.hex).
  • Application files are provided by Opticon but could also be provided by a reseller, distributor or developed on ones own by using the freely downloadable SDK (See the downloads section). If provided by Opticon the application files will almost always follow a naming convention beginning with RFF (e.g. RFF35106).
  1. Download necessary files.
    • Firmware: This would be either the Bootloader, OS, Application or combination file from the Downloads section.
    • Appload: This is the loader program for the PC that installs the firmware file onto the unit. See the download section.
    • USB Drivers: These drivers are necessary so that Windows will provide a COM port that Appload needs to communicate with the device. Both 32 bit and 64 bit versions are found in the downloads section.
  2. Install USB Drivers (If you need assistance with this please contact Opticon Technical Support by e-mail at support@opticonusa.com or by phone at 1.800.636.0090 x2127).
  3. Install Appload
    • Unzip the file Appload EAGV0142.zip by right-clicking and selecting 'Extract All'
    • double-click the resulting file 'Appload Setup.exe' which will start the install wizard. You may need to select 'next' a few times and are allowed to choose the install folder and whether Appload places an icon on your desktop. You may simply choose the defaults for all options. Appload will launch at the end of the install process.
  4. Connect the OPN-2003 to your PC
  5. Install the firmware
    • Launch Appload (if it is not already running).
    • select 'Settings' > 'Port' > choose the port that says 'Opticon USB Code Reader(1D)'
    • select 'Settings' > 'IrDA Adapter/Cradle type' > 'Not installed'
    • select 'File' > 'Download' > browse to the firmware file downloaded in step 1 and select it.
  6. When complete the OPN-2003 will emit a series of beeps and reboot. When the LED is steady RED (indicating charging) or GREEN (indicating fully charged) the process is complete and you may disconnect your OPN-2003 from the PC. instruction manuals for the various applications are available for download in the Downloads section.

Does the scanner have an internal serial number that can be output as part of the scanned data? Yes, although we currently only have one PC side application that will put the serial number in the file with the scanned data, the "OPN2001 Data Downloader" application. No Yes, although we currently only have one PC side application that will put the serial number in the file with the scanned data, the "OPN2001 Data Downloader" application. Yes, this is a configurable option. Data is transferred using the NETO32 program or a custom program using the NETO protocol.
Can the scanner be setup to include scanned data time stamp? Yes, using most of our PC side applications including the "OPN2001 Data Downloader" application. Yes Yes, using most of our PC side applications including the "OPN2001 Data Downloader" application. Data stored as Database file (multiple scans of same barcode increases quantity rather than adding new lines to the file, also this means the time stamp only exists for the most recent scan of the specific barcode)
