Cold Boot

While holding the power button: use the stylus to press the reset switch on the back of the unit.

SD Card Compatibility

The PHL-8000 is known to work with at least 16GB SDHC cards (tested with Kingston 16GB microSD card with adapter). Note however that firmware upgrades via SD card require an SD card of capacity less than 1 GB. It is also known that SD cards that have been adapted up to full size from a smaller size (micro to full for example) do not work consistently with firmware upgrades and should be avoided.

Backup and Restore

The PHL-8000 has a backup and restore feature that saves your configuration to the DiskOnChip or an SD Card. The DiskOnChip is not reformatted when the device is factory reset.

Backup

To backup the PHL-8000, navigate to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Control Center > Backup & Restore. The backup can be saved to the internal DiskOnChip or an external SD card. To begin the backup, select "Backup Now" and then "Yes".

Restore

To restore the PHL-8000, navigate to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Control Center > Backup & Restore. The PHL-8000 can be restored from the internal DiskOnChip or an external SD card. To begin the restore, select "Restore Now" and then "Yes". The device will then proceed to reboot and your settings will be restored.

Auto Restore

The PHL-8000 has the ability to automatically restore the most recent backup after a cold boot. To use this feature, create a *.cmd file (where * is the name of the file you wish you to create) in the DiskOnChip\Startup\Cold directory containing one of the following statements:

  • "cmd /C Backuprestore -DOC" (To restore the backup from the DiskOnChip) or
  • "cmd /C Backuprestore -SD" (To restore the backup from the SD card)

Please note that the backup should be present on the specified location or errors may occur.

Firmware Updates

Notes: These same processes can be used to downgrade the firmware as well as upgrade. Simply select the appropriate firmware file.

Barcode Reader

  • Download the latest barcode reader firmware for your device (see downloads table below).
  • Unzip and copy the firmware file to the PHL-8112 either via SD card or over an ActiveSync (or Windows Mobile Device Center) connection. If you use an SD card ensure you use FAT format on an SD card with capacity no greater than 2GB. High Capacity (SDHC) cards are not supported.
  • Install a battery with at least 30% charge.
  • Close the battery door and lock both swivel locks.
  • Boot the device if it is not already booted
  • Double-tap the barcode icon at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap the 'Firmware Upgrade' tab
  • Tap 'Open' and browse to the firmware file you have copied to the device.
  • Tap 'Upgrade'. Select 'Yes' when prompted.
  • The process is complete when you see the message 'Firmware update completed'.

PHL-8000 OS

Via SD card

Requirements
  • 1 SD card of capacity less than 1 GB (cards of 2GB or less may also work but have not explicitly been tested). Note that the SD card must be a true full size SD card and not a micro or mini card that has been adjusted to full size with an adapter.
  • An SD card reader appropriate for your SD card
  • A computer with an active internet connection
  • PHL8xxx device, battery, battery door, power adapter and stylus
Step 1: Preparation
  1. Download the firmware file for the PHL8xxx (See downloads table below)
  2. Connect your SD card to the computer via the card reader
  3. delete any files and folders from the SD card and ensure it is formatted with the FAT file system (Windows standard)
  4. Unzip the firmware files and place the uncompressed files (xip.nb0 and EB_SC800.nb0) onto the root of the SD card
  5. Properly eject the SD card reader from your PC (On Windows use the eject option in the system tray or Windows explorer, for Mac use the eject icon next to the device in Finder)
  6. Ensure the PHL8xxx battery is charged to at least 30%
Step 2: Upgrade
  1. Install the SD card into the PHL8xxx (the socket is under the battery behind a small swivel door, be sure to insert the card label facing up)
  2. Install the battery and battery door and lock both swivel locks
  3. Connect the PHL8xxx to its power supply (supplied AC power adapter block)
  4. Press and hold the power key and while doing so use the stylus to press the reset switch on the back of the device (just above the stylus socket, next to the labels)
  5. Continue holding the power key and immediately after releasing the reset switch press and hold the 0 key (on numeric keypads) or the space key (on qwerty keypads)
  6. Hold these two keys until you see the updating message on the screen at which point you may release them
  7. Wait for the PHL8xxx to finish its update (a success message will appear)
  8. Again press and hold the power key and use the stylus to press the reset switch (once the reset switch is pressed there is no longer a need to hold the power button this time), the PHL8xxx will boot up to the Windows Embedded CE desktop and be ready to use
  9. Power down the device, remove the SD card from the socket, reinstall the battery and close and lock the battery door
  10. The device is now ready for normal use
