the ‘a’ can be 1 or 2 denoting a short (telephone style numbering and lettering) or long (1 letter per key) keypad respectively

the ‘b’ can be 1, 4 or 5 denoting 1D, 1D long range or 2D respectively

the ‘c’ can be 2, 3 or 4 denoting the combinations of GSM/GPRS, Compact Flash Socket and WLAN. (Note: All versions have Bluetooth version 1.2 and 1GB maximum SD card slots)

Configuration Number (C/N)

The configuration number can be used to determine certain information about a unit. For example, the 4th digit determines which Wi-Fi module is installed. A C denotes a ZCOM WiFi module and an H determines a Summit Wi-Fi module.

GSM Chipsets

The models of PHL-7000 with GSM chipsets are referred to as the following:

• MC55: GSM bands 900, 1800, 1900
• MC56: GSM bands 850, 1800, 1900

OS update

Do not disconnect the device from power or turn it off during the flash process

1. Download the appropriate BIN files from the Downloads table at the bottom of this page.
2. Then extract them to the root of an SD card.
   • Note: The SD card should be formatted FAT and contain no other files/folders than those necessary to flash the OS and/or Bootloader.
3. Insert SD card into PHL 7xxx device
4. Perform Cold Reset
   • Press and Hold F1 + F4 + PWR
   • Keyboard will light up. As soon as light goes out...
   • Press and Hold F1 + F2 + F3 for approximately 10 seconds
5. OS flash will begin automatically

OS Update Troubleshooting

My OS is not updating, It says “Update Fail”, and reboots (correctly)!

Make sure your SD card is formatted at a PC as FAT (not FAT32). If this still fails, use the Update tool (located on the SD card), and rename the xip.nb0 to XIP.NB0 (all capitals).

Make sure the terminal is attached to the power, and try again. If this does not work, this might be SD card related. Please try another.

My OS is updated correctly, reboots, but gets stuck at "Loading the OS image" screen

This happens occasionally with some SD cards. Please remove the SD card, and preform a cold boot.

DiskOnChip

In the DiskOnChip folder is a backup folder. Within the backup folder are folders labeled [Cold], [Warm], [Common]. These locations are where autorun programs can be placed for the various reboot types. Common works on both types of reboot.

How to setup a GPRS connection

1. First ensure you have a recent OS version.
2. Ensure you have an active SIM inserted with an established data plan through your carrier.
3. Enable GSM/GPRS
4. Navigate to Start > Settings > Network and Dial-up
   • If GPRS Connection is not already present:
     • Double-Tap 'Make New Connection'
     • Give the connection a distinct name (i.e. GPRS)
     • Select Dial-Up Connection and tap <Next>
     • Continue at Step 5.
   • If GPRS Connection is present:
     • Tap-Hold on GPRS Connection then tap Properties
     • Continue at Step 5.
5. Under 'Select a modem' choose 'SIEMENS GPRS Modem' (If this is not an option update your OS).
6. Tap 'Configure'
7. Port Settings tab:
   • Baud Rate: 115200
   • Data Bits: 8
   • Parity: None
   • Stop Bits: 1
   • Flow Control: Hardware
   • Test device has the remaining 3 check boxes unchecked
8. Call Options tab:
   • Cancel the call if not connected within <checked>
   • 120 Seconds
   • Wait for dial tone before dialing <unchecked>
   • Wait for credit card: 0
   • Special modem commands: +CGDCONT=1,"IP","INTERNET" but replace INTERNET with the APN of the network (i.e. WAP.CINGULAR)

How do I change the default settings of the function keys?

Click the Windows icon on the taskbar, and then go to Settings -> Control Panel. Double-tap on Control Center. The last option on the resulting page should be entitled "Fn-Key Settings." Click the Property button next to it. In the resulting window you can attach new applications to the function keys, or enable / disable the keys.

What is the battery life of the standard battery? Of the extended battery? The standard battery life is rated at 3000 mAh (milliamp hours), and the extended battery is rated at 4000 mAh. The extended battery therefore yields about 33% more battery life. In a test of real battery life duration, the standard battery lasted around 7 hours, and the extended battery around 9.5 hours. This test included all of the devices within the PHL unit turned on, and no scans were made.

Is the built-in WLAN card Cisco certified?

The short answer is that no, it isn't. However, a specially-designed Summit CF10G card can be swapped out for the internal WLAN card, and combined with the Summit Config Utility, the user can get on a Cisco-certified network with the PHL7xxx.

Steps to upgrade the WLAN card:

• Disconnect any power, remove the battery
• Ground yourself, get rid of any static electricity you might have on you
• Remove the top cover housing
• With a Torx T8 screwdriver, remove the front cover
• Disconnect the ribbon cable attaching the main logic board to the keypad board
• Remove the two Philips screws at the bottom front of the logic board
• Pull board out carefully
• Disconnect the ribbon cable attaching the scanner board to the logic board
• Disconnect the tiny power cable attached to the logic board; leave the power cable + battery attached (or else you will lose all the data on the unit!)
• Remove the four Philips screws on the CompactFlash housing; pull gently but firmly to remove the housing
• Remove the Philips screw holding the ZCom WLAN card in place
• Remove the ZCom WLAN card
• Remove the antenna from the ZCom WLAN card, and connect it to the main connector on the Summit card
• Plug the Summit card into the now-empty CF slot (it will be tight with the antenna wire, but it's possible; just be careful!)
• Reassemble unit
• Replace warranty stickers

How can i check which WiFi module is integrated in my PHL-7xxx unit?

If the C/N is 32EC10A: it's a Zcom module.

If the C/N is 32EH10A: it's a Summit module.

Does the PHL7xxx have SDIO support?

No, it does not; it only supports SD storage cards.

How do I play a sound in my C#, .NET Compact Framework application?

To play a .wav file, you must write a P/Invoke function for the native PlaySound function. Please see PlaySound on MSDN.

Can the LED be programmatically controlled?

No, the LED cannot be controlled; there is no such API that allows for this functionality. The LED is used for representing the Scan Engine status only, and is fixed to the COM port to which the Scan Engine is connected to.
