Quiet zones sometimes called margins or clear zones, are the white space around the barcode separating it from the rest of the document or label. In a 1D barcode [[symbology]] the symbology will specify a clear space to precede the start character and follow the stop character. In a 2D barcode symbology the quiet zone surrounds the whole symbol. Our [[Universal Menu Book]] contains margin check options to tell the barcode reader to decode barcodes with smaller quiet zones than specified by the symbology. Doing so may increase the probability of misreads.
